The Choice window is open from Friday, January 3, 2020 through 4:00 PM, Friday, February 28, 2020.
We STRONGLY encourage potentially interested sutudents and parents to learn about School in the Woods.
Given the unique aspects of our school program, it is very important that you and your interested child attend the Informational Meeting and see the school in its setting to learn about the unique aspects of the program prior to signing up. This is a very important decison for an entire school year that should be considered carefully before submitting the D20 and School in the Woods choice application materials. Students interested in signing up to be a School in the Woods naturalist need to be committed to participating in a strongly connected community that shares responsibilities while supporting one another. Our environment, limited staff, and unique programming attributes require that those students attending demonstrate safe and responsible behavior at all times while accepting personal responsiblity for their decisions and actions. Each applicant should consider how they plan to contribute positively to our School in the Woods community and follow our School in the Woods RULER Charter.
*Note to Out-of District Families: SITW must accept District 20 students first. We have always filled all available seats with D20 students. It Is unlikely that an Out-of District student would get into the school given our priority policy and the number of applicants..
Important Details - If you are still interested after attending the information session and Open House, submit an application to the district office before the closing date of Choice Application Window on Friday, February 28, 2020. Please be aware that there is one additional page that will print along with the Academy District 20 Choice School Application Signature Form, called the School in the Woods Agreement. This will need to be read carefully, signed, and submitted with your choice application signature form in order for your application to be considered complete before the deadline. The selection of the 78 students is from a lottery drawing. There is no advantage in being one of the earliest applicants. Please take sufficient time to consider the choice implications and understand that if the student's name is drawn, the commitment is for the entire year. Students who are selected to attend School in the Woods will be notified by mid-April.
Bus service from most D20 elementary schools to School in the Woods is provided by D20's Transportation department and is part of the "Choice Busing" system of D20. It is imperative that any student riding D20 bus understand the transportation policies. Safe, and responsible behavior are absolutely necessary in order that all students are physically and emotionally safe to and from their schools. SITW students riding the bus currently pay a Choice Transportation fee for bus rides. This cost is subject to change. Please understand that transportation to SITW using this system often has longer bus rides, meaning longer ride times which will impact your after school schedule.
Your child will automatically return to their home school for 5th grade unless you place another Choice Application for another school. Note: Since TCA is not a "Home School" the student's slot may be forfeited. Reapplying to the Wait List may be required, and TCA may not be able to seat any returning SITW students for their fifth grade year. Please check with TCA for more details about your circumstances.
We appreciate you and your child taking the time to learn as much as you can about our school and considering all implications carefully before making a final decision.
You will find Choice Information and Application on our D20 Home Page
