Arts & Physical Activity
The arts and physical activity are important parts of an SITW education. Our core group of educators and volunteers lead activities and clubs. SITW standard activities include archery, hiking, and art. During recess, we hold clubs which can include running, newspaper writing, yoga, knitting, and chess, depending on volunteer availability. Because of the intensive focus on natural sciences, we cannot offer formal world language and physical education instruction.
Exploratory Education
We consider students naturalists as they grow academically in a living classroom. Naturalists find their love for living in a natural world by studying outdoor pioneers, participating in environmental programs and engaging with guest experts. Classes are held outside (weather permitting), and students find their outdoor solo spots for quiet, individual study. In the spring, students complete a final, month-long field project.
Custom Curriculum
SITW’s mission is reflected in the hearts of its teachers. Dedicated teachers work as a team with leadership to create a customized curriculum different than any textbook. They are advocates for students and encourage thoughtful risk-taking. More than classrooms, SITW is a learning lab for teachers and students as they discover, build, test and adapt new ways of learning.
