Students conduct research and investigations, engage in academic writing, and problem-solve using observations and data. We present core subjects with a connection to the outdoors. We cover topics like soil studies, ornithology, terrestrial invertebrates, and more!","
Arts & Physical Activity

The arts and physical activity are important parts of an SITW education. Our core group of educators and volunteers lead activities and clubs. SITW standard activities include archery, hiking, and art. During recess, we hold clubs which can include running, newspaper writing, yoga, knitting, and chess, depending on volunteer availability. Because of the intensive focus on natural sciences, we cannot offer formal world language and physical education instruction.

Exploratory Education

We consider students naturalists as they grow academically in a living classroom. Naturalists find their love for living in a natural world by studying outdoor pioneers, participating in environmental programs, and engaging with guest experts. Classes are held outside (weather permitting), and students find their outdoor solo spots for quiet, individual study. In the spring, students complete a final, month-long field project.

Custom Curriculum

SITW’s mission is reflected in the hearts of its teachers. Dedicated teachers work as a team with leadership to create a customized curriculum different from any textbook. They are advocates for students and encourage thoughtful risk-taking. More than classrooms, SITW is a learning lab for teachers and students as they discover, build, test, and adapt new ways of learning.

Reading and Language Arts

Differentiated content addressing 4th grade standards

High-level realistic fiction novels

Naturalist biography studies

Native American storytelling

Nonfiction articles

Critical thinking

Oral speaking and presenting

Abundant writing opportunities

Penmanship and keyboard skills

Mathematics

Differentiated content addressing 4th grade standards

Emphasis on in-depth problem solving

Readiness-based groupings within SITW community

We use Eureka Math Squared as our main resource

Science and Social Studies

Natural sciences – abiotic and biotic

Colorado life zones and ecosystems

Astronomy and meteorology

Energy and waves

In-depth field work and experiences

Month-long science-based field projects in spring

Earth systems

Colorado history and state government

","Published","science-basedandnbsp","2020-11-17T21:04:19.777Z","2026-02-11T19:13:24.678Z","2040-11-01T20:04:19.777Z",[119
[121,128,135,142,150
"https://asd20websitestorage.blob.core.windows.net/website-files/message-images/science-basedandnbsp/thumbnail-md/IMG_6190_jpeg_250x250.jpg","thumbnail-md",250,"IMG_6190_jpeg_250x250.jpg","message-images/science-basedandnbsp/thumbnail-md/IMG_6190_jpeg_250x250.jpg",35768
"https://asd20websitestorage.blob.core.windows.net/website-files/message-images/science-basedandnbsp/thumbnail-sm/IMG_6190_jpeg_100x100.jpg","thumbnail-sm",100,"IMG_6190_jpeg_100x100.jpg","message-images/science-basedandnbsp/thumbnail-sm/IMG_6190_jpeg_100x100.jpg",6379
"https://asd20websitestorage.blob.core.windows.net/website-files/message-images/science-basedandnbsp/thumbnail-xs/IMG_6190_jpeg_50x50.jpg","thumbnail-xs",50,"IMG_6190_jpeg_50x50.jpg","message-images/science-basedandnbsp/thumbnail-xs/IMG_6190_jpeg_50x50.jpg",1990
"https://asd20websitestorage.blob.core.windows.net/website-files/message-images/science-basedandnbsp/banner/IMG_6190_jpeg_800x300.jpg","banner",800,300,"IMG_6190_jpeg_800x300.jpg","message-images/science-basedandnbsp/banner/IMG_6190_jpeg_800x300.jpg",103870
"https://asd20websitestorage.blob.core.windows.net/website-files/message-images/science-basedandnbsp/full/IMG_6190_jpeg_1200x800.jpg","full",1200,"IMG_6190_jpeg_1200x800.jpg","message-images/science-basedandnbsp/full/IMG_6190_jpeg_1200x800.jpg",310331,true
Students with shovels studying in the field.",[],[],[163
166
"General","45f0b4b0-9610-11ee-9ae8-c39bd1d4bd7e","About Our Library","/library/","School in the Woods library houses thousands of books including a wealth of popular fiction books and a broad assortment of nonfiction books.
