On February 2nd School and the Woods was spotlighted at the Board of Education meeting for District 20. Some of our naturalists gave tips and tricks on how to make a pine needle basket. Making pine needle baskets has been a tradition at School in the Woods for 25 years. The staff and students were able to show off their pine needle baskets. They then gave these tips! First, always keep your gauge full! The next naturalist said, "Don't ever let your gauge fall off, it can be stressful." The next student said, "If the gauge does fall off don't panic! Just try to put it on again as best you can." Then we had advice on making sure that stitches on a pine needle basket are done correctly. The last piece of advice was that as you stitch, "keep your sinew pulled tight!" After the tips and tricks, the naturalists kept the board members on their toes by having them try to make their very own pine needle basket. We had fun working together for a few minutes while Ms. Johnson spoke about the academic unit that surrounds this craft at School in the Woods. We had a blast and want to thank the board for everything they do for Academy School District 20!
